Tax Returns & Filing
Individual & Business Tax Return Preparation
An accurate return filed on time is the best thing you can do to stay off the IRS’s radar. At Tax Resolution Services, our Enrolled Agents and former IRS agents prepare individual and business returns the way people who used to work inside the IRS would: with an eye for exactly what gets flagged.
Individual Tax Returns
We prepare individual returns for people dealing with:
- W-2 income combined with 1099 or self-employment income
- Multiple income sources, investment income, or retirement distributions
- Major life changes: marriage, divorce, a new dependent, a home sale
- Missed deductions or credits from prior, self-prepared returns
- Returns that need to be corrected or amended
- Returns filed incorrectly by a previous preparer
A single misreported 1099, an incorrect exemption, or a math error is often the first domino that leads to an IRS notice, and eventually, back tax debt.
Business Tax Returns
Your business structure determines how you’re taxed, what forms you file, and where the IRS tends to look closest. Here’s what we handle for each:
Sole Proprietorships. Business income and expenses are reported on Schedule C, attached to your personal Form 1040. All net profit is subject to self-employment tax (Social Security and Medicare) on top of income tax, which surprises a lot of first-time filers. This is also the structure the IRS scrutinizes most for deduction issues, particularly home office claims, vehicle expenses, and round-number expense entries that don’t match receipts.
Single-Member LLCs. For tax purposes, the IRS treats a single-member LLC as a “disregarded entity” by default, meaning you still file a Schedule C exactly like a sole proprietor, and you still owe self-employment tax on the profit. The LLC gives you liability protection under state law, but it does not change how you’re taxed unless you elect otherwise.
Multi-Member LLCs and Partnerships. These file Form 1065, an informational partnership return. The business itself doesn’t pay tax; instead, each member gets a Schedule K-1 reporting their share of the profit or loss, which they then report on their personal return. General partners typically owe self-employment tax on their share; guaranteed payments to partners add another layer we make sure is handled correctly.
S-Corporations. S-Corps file Form 1120-S and pass profit through to owners via K-1s, similar to a partnership, but with one critical difference the IRS watches closely: owner-employees must pay themselves “reasonable compensation” through W-2 payroll before taking any additional profit as a distribution. Distributions aren’t subject to self-employment tax, which is the main tax advantage of the S-Corp structure, but underpaying yourself on the W-2 side to dodge payroll tax is one of the most common audit triggers we see. We make sure your compensation is documented and defensible.
C-Corporations. C-Corps file Form 1120 and pay tax at the corporate level, currently a flat 21% federal rate. If profits are distributed to shareholders as dividends, those dividends are taxed again on the shareholder’s personal return, which is what people mean by “double taxation.” C-Corps also carry more complex compliance requirements around retained earnings, officer compensation, and corporate formalities.
Whatever your structure, we also make sure your annual return lines up with your quarterly payroll tax filings (Forms 940/941) if you have employees. Mismatches between the two are one of the fastest ways a business ends up flagged.
